Dogs, cats or some species of monkeys move their ears violently to direct them to sounds. The fact that humans are also capable of doing this was previously unknown. Now a research team from the Saarland has shown for the first time that humans unconsciously make tiny ear movements that go exactly in the direction in which they direct their attention. They were able to prove this, among other things, by using electrical impulses from the rudimentary motor system of the ear. The corresponding publication has appeared in the journal “eLife”. Hunde, Katzen oder einige Affenarten bewegen heftig ihre Ohren, um sie auf Geräusche zu richten. Dass auch der Mensch dazu in der Lage ist, war bisher unbekannt. Nun hat ein Forscherteam aus dem Saarland erstmals gezeigt, dass Menschen unbewusst winzige Ohrbewegungen machen, die genau in die Richtung gehen, in die sie ihre Aufmerksamkeit lenken.
