A small amount of oxygen, about 0.4 percent, does not enter the body through the lungs but through the skin. A team led by the biophysicist and COMM member Prof. Lars Kaestner in Homburg is now investigating a way of increasing this proportion to up to 10 percent. If this is successful, intensive care patients, e.g. as in the current corona crisis, might be better supplied with oxygen in critical phases in the future (e.g. when not enough respiratory equipment is available). Ein kleiner Teil des Sauerstoffs, ca. 0,4 Prozent, gelangt nicht über die Lunge, sondern über die Haut in den Körper. Ein Team um den Biophysiker Prof. Lars Kaestner erforscht nun eine Möglichkeit, diesen Anteil auf bis zu 10 Prozent zu erhöhen. Gelingt dies, könnten künftig beispielsweise Intensivpatienten wie in der aktuellen Coronakrise in kritischen Phasen, etwa, wenn nicht genügend Beatmungsgeräte zur Verfügung stehen, besser mit Sauerstoff versorgt werden.
