Exchange of PhD students between the partner institutions is one of the most important elements of the structured training programme of the International Research Training Group IRTG 1830. Since the start of the program in 2012, about eighty IRTG trainees from the Saarland University, the TU Kaiserslautern and the University of Alberta in Edmonton (Canada) took this opportunitiy in order to obtain experience for their professional and personal development. The picture shows Anne Könnel from Prof. Katrin Philippar`s lab (Saarland University, Plant Biology, COMM-member & IRTG-1830-PI) and Anne Grethen from Sandro Keller`s lab (TU Kaiserslautern, Biophysics, IRTG 1830-PI) just after their arrival in Edmonton in August 2019. During her two-months research stay in the lab of Prof. Joanne Lemieux (Biochemistry Dept.) at the University of Alberta, Anne Könnel worked on her own PhD-project and learned more about methods and workflows of protein expression, purification and further analysis. Anne Grethen was hosted by Prof. Michael Overduin (Biochemistry Dept.) and mainly worked on an ongoing project in the Overduin lab. After their return in October 2019 both trainees were thrilled and reported on a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Der Austausch von Doktoranden zwischen den Partnerinstitutionen ist eines der wichtigsten Elemente des strukturierten Ausbildungsprogramms des Internationalen Graduiertenkollegs IRTG 1830. Seit Beginn des Programms im Jahr 2012 nutzten rund achtzig Promovenden der Universität des Saarlandes, der TU Kaiserslautern und der Universität Alberta in Edmonton (Kanada) diese Möglichkeit, um Erfahrungen für ihre berufliche und persönliche Entwicklung zu sammeln. Das Bild zeigt Anne Könnel aus der AG Prof. Katrin Philippar (Universität des Saarlandes, Pflanzenbiologie; COMM-Mitglied und IRTG 1830-PI) und Anne Grethen aus der AG Prof. Sandro Keller (TU Kaiserslautern, Biophysik; IRTG 1830-PI) kurz nach ihrer Ankunft in Edmonton m August 2019. Während ihres zweimonatigen Forschungsaufenthaltes im Labor von Prof. Joanne Lemieux an der Universiät Alberta (Biochemie), arbeitete Anne Könnel an ihrem eigenen Forschungsprojekt und lernte mehr über Methoden und Arbeitsabläufe der Proteinexpression, -reinigung und -weiterverarbeitung. Anne Grethen wurde von Prof. Michael Overduin (Biochemie) betreut und arbeitete hauptsächlich an einem laufenden Projekt im Overduin-Labor. Nach ihrer Rückkehr im Oktober 2019 waren beide Doktorandinnen begeistert und berichteten über eine einmalige Erfahrung, die es ihnen ermöglichte, ihre beruflichen Fähigkeiten zu verbessern und sich persönlich zu entwickeln.
